Korean (Panax) Ginseng : Benefits for men.
The Harder It Gets.
Korean red ginseng (Panax ginseng) may help treat erectile dysfunction (ED):
Studies
Some studies have shown that Korean red ginseng can improve erectile function, including rigidity, penetration, and maintenance of erection.
A 2012 study found that Korean ginseng berry extract improved sexual function in men with mild-to-moderate erectile dysfunction.
Another study found that men who took 900 mg of Korean ginseng three times a day for eight weeks had less trouble getting an erection than those who took a placebo.
Mechanism
Ginseng’s active components, ginsenosides, can increase nitric oxide (NO) synthesis in endothelial cells and perivascular nerves. This causes smooth muscle to relax, allowing more blood to enter the corpus cavernosum and causing erection.
Sperm count and motility
Animal studies and one study of 46 men found that Asian ginseng increased sperm production, sexual activity, and sexual performance.
Other benefits
Korean ginseng may also:
Improve frontal brain lobe function
Reduce inflammation
Boost the immune system
Improve heart health
Treat diabetes
Increase energy
Decrease stress
You should speak with a medical professional before taking ginseng or adding it to your diet. Ginseng could affect blood pressure, interfere with blood clotting, and could potentially interfere with blood thinner medication.
